Heritage & Renewal

Historic Preservation & Building Renewal

Careful change for places that matter.

An existing building carries memories, craftsmanship, and a continuing purpose. Renewal requires an understanding of what gives it significance, what its physical condition allows, and how it must serve people today. The appropriate response may be a conservation plan, a carefully coordinated reconstruction, or a series of considered improvements.

CSNA’s work at Saint John’s Abbey Church and The Broadmoor Main Hotel demonstrates two distinct approaches. One establishes a framework for conservation through investigation and specialist coordination. The other brings contemporary comfort to a historic hotel while protecting its defining character.

01

Investigate before deciding

For Saint John’s Abbey Church, CSNA prepared a work plan for a conservation grant proposal and coordinated specialist responsibilities. Following the grant award, we guided, reviewed, and approved artisan and engineering findings and recommendations. The conservation plan brings knowledge of worship, art, materials, building systems, and architecture into a coherent framework.

02

Let testing inform the response

The Abbey is testing lighting recommendations with local suppliers through temporary installations before permanent installation. Investigation of the Bell Banner includes fieldwork and laboratory analysis to understand the concrete and reinforcing steel. The story distinguishes completed investigation from continuing work, showing how a plan can connect careful study with considered action.

03

Protect character while meeting present needs

At The Broadmoor Main Hotel, CSNA served as architect of record, coordinating architecture and engineering to reconstruct the guest room tower while protecting historic spaces and the defining exterior. At the Abbey Church, the conservation framework supports a modern landmark that remains a place of daily worship. In each case, the building’s continuing purpose is central to its future.
